NBS Bank Liwonde Service Centre manager Robert Mtemachani has said a clean environment is crucial to contain the cholera outbreak.

He said this on Saturday when the bank led residents in Liwonde, Machinga in a clean-up campaign aimed at restoring the town’s status as a clean place.

The exercise comes after Machinga District Council three months ago conducted a clean-up exercise at Liwonde market as a precautionary measure against the further spread of cholera.

“People who are not well-informed about the effects of illegal dumping of refuse are contributing to the town’s unsanitary condition. With this initiative, we want to keep our town clean while informing our people about the effects of poor waste disposal,” said Mtemachani.

He said keeping surroundings clean is part of people’s social responsibility to help government achieve its goal of making Liwonde Town a secondary city.

Royalty College principal Rafael Mkandawire, whose institution joined the exercise, expressed the need to encourage youths to embrace the culture of practising good hygiene.

“That is why we urged our students to join the exercise because it is our responsibility to build better citizens who will bring positive impact towards our environment,” he said.

Ever-Ready Group of Companies director Lifa Chimkango, a company which is responsible for removing waste in Liwonde, commended NBS Bank for the timely gesture.

Machinga acting environmental officer Andrew Hamuza said he was optimistic that the clean-up exercise will promote sanitation in the district.
